Leonel Messi

In Uganda, football is not only the most passionately supported sport ever but the most talked about event alongside entertainment. In November, the sport`s biggest competition, The FIFA World cup started in Qatar and to most Ugandans, the timing of such a tournament couldn’t have been any better, especially at a time when most households own television sets and can afford to pay for a subscription to watch the tournament and also those who couldn’t afford that were being catered for by the national broadcasters in UBC or also to the passionate fans who want to watch with friends, they could catch the glimpse at their favorite bars and “bibandas”. For this tournament, it was evident that it was going to be a FIFA World Cup like no other.

The first to be hosted in the Middle East, the first to be played in November and December, and the first of its size to be held in such a small geographical area, Qatar 2022 offered a fresh twist on this old and much-loved festival of football. But while the treading of so much new ground came with opportunities – the novel prospect of attending multiple World Cup matches in a single day, for example – the risks were clear and undeniable.

Gianni Infantino admitted as much earlier this week when he confessed to pre-tournament concerns “about having so many fans from so many countries, at the same time, in the same place”. “In a normal World Cup, you have in one city fans of two countries, not more,” added the FIFA President. “Here, you have 32 countries plus all [the] other fans from the world who come to enjoy the World Cup together in the same place.” Given that the place in question has a population of less than 2.9 million and its stadiums are all within a 35-mile radius, questions naturally arose about how Qatar and its infrastructure would cope with a such a mass invasion.

Others wondered how the on-field fare would be impacted by the tournament taking place in the middle of most players’ domestic seasons, with reduced preparation time an inevitable consequence. One by one, of course, those doubts were swept away by a tidal wave of fantastic football, flawless organization, and friendly, passionate atmospheres on the streets and in the stadiums. Jurgen Klinsmann this week described it as “a World Cup organized to perfection”, while Infantino has been far from alone in declaring Qatar 2022 to be, quite simply, “the best ever”.

The same description is, of course, being applied increasingly widely to the tournament’s star man. Lionel Messi was already a leading contender for ‘GOAT’ status but his claims to that title have been further fortified by a truly magnificent month in Qatar.

In the highest-scoring World Cup of all time, it was goals from Argentina’s captain that did the most to determine the direction of the title. And not even La Albiceleste’s fiercest rivals could begrudge this wonderful player his well-deserved moment with the prize he has so long coveted.

Lionel Messi celebrating Argentina’s Victory

From the butt of the world’s jokes to the worthiest of champions, La Albiceleste enjoyed one hell of a ride. And just as no one foresaw that opening-match defeat to Saudi Arabia, few could have imagined that they would recover to achieve their long-held dream in such impressive – and dramatic – circumstances.

As for their talisman, what more can be said? Messi is quite rightly a beloved figure far beyond Argentina’s borders, and neutrals across the world were both captivated and converted to his team’s cause by the little magician’s pursuit of World Cup glory.

Morocco

It took 88 years of attempts for an African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals. Morocco was the continental trailblazer.

After sinking Belgium in the group stage, Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Co eliminated Spain in the last 16 and Portugal in the quarter-finals. The Atlas Lions also gave France a strict examination in the last four before losing an end-to-end encounter with Croatia 2-1 in the battle for bronze.

Croatia

It simply must rank as one of the greatest achievements in World Cup history – a nation inhabited by fewer than four million people finishing second and third at back-to-back editions.

Zlatko Dalic lost several key components of his 2018 side, such as Danijel Subasic, Ivan Rakitic, and Mario Mandzukic, but new stars emerged in the shape of Dominik Livakovic and Josko Gvardiol to complement the divine talent of Luka Modric. The Croatian highlight was a stunning elimination of tournament favorites Brazil en route to finishing third.

Japan

Would four-time champions Germany or 21st-century titans Spain win Group E? Japan made a mockery of the question the masses were assessing by slaying both those giants to finish top. The Samurai Blue also became only the third team in World Cup history, and the first since West Germany in 1970, to win two separate games in which they had been trailing at half-time.

Out of sight, out of mind goes a famous adage. Brazilian World Cup-winning Legend Pele passed on last week on Thursday at the age of 82.FIFA Boss Gianni Infantino revealed FIFA will ask every country to name a stadium after Pele.

Pele whose casket bears “ The King “ is considered to be the greatest Footballer of all time. His demise at the age of 82 came about after a series of battles with Cancer.

The death of the Brazilian Legend sparked a mammoth of tributes from Football lovers all over the globe. In fact, even non Football lovers also joined in to pay tribute to the legend.

It is upon this basis that FIFA Boss Gianni Infantino seeks to have Pele’s legacy cemented all over the world.

We are going to ask that all countries in the world have at least one Stadium with the name Pele,” said Infantino, adding “ so that children know Pele’s importance.”

Pele is the only Football player to have enjoyed and won the World Cup on 3 separate occasions with Brazil. This was in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Pele is the only Football player to have enjoyed and won the World Cup on 3 separate occasions with Brazil. This was in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

It is not a new thing to name a stadium after an individual. A footballer in this case. A number of top stadiums across the world have been named after great footballers.

The Puskas Arena, a magnificent stadium in Hungary is named after Ference Puskas. He not only has a Stadium named after him but also the FIFA Puskas Award which was established in 2009. He played for Hungary and Real Madrid in the 1950s.

Real Madrid’s home stadium is actually named after their former player, manager, and president of the club – Santiago Bernabeu. Bernabeu even went ahead to help set up a tournament in 1955 which would later develop into the Champions League.

Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

Argentine Legend Diego Maradona also has a stadium named after him in Argentina. The World Cup and Balloon d’Or winner played for Barcelona, Napoli, and Boca juniors in his illustrious 20 years career.

However, all these players have had stadiums named/built-in their nes in their own countries. infantino’s idea to have every country name a stadium after Pele is yet to be seen how it will be achieved.

Monday 13 February 2023 was the most anticipated day for not only the Anfield enthusiastic fans but also the traveling Toffees. A game where a lot was at stake. Liverpool holding on to a slim top-four hope. Everton under new manager Sean Dyche looking to beat the relegation demon knocking at their door.

Going into the game, Everton came with more confidence than usual. Despite being in the relegation zone, they fancied their chances against a struggling Liverpool. The latter had lost last weekend to Wolves in a 3-0 humbling. Everton, on the other hand, had surprised league leaders Arsenal with a 1-0 win.

However, not all that glitter is gold. Sean Dyche might have realized this bitter truth late. After the scorer of last weekend’s Everton winner against Arsenal, James Tarkowski headed off the bar, hell was late loose. Quick goals from Mohamed Salah ( 38 minutes) and Cody Gakpo ( 49 minutes) were enough to see off the visitors.

Cody Gakpo scored his first Liverpool goal.

Despite the much-needed win, the talk of the day was all about $35 million Forward Cody Gakpo finally netting his first Liverpool goal after joining from PSV Eindhoven after the World Cup in the January transfer window. It had taken a whopping six games for the Netherlands international to finally open his account for Reds.

A lot of positives have been drawn from the win. Key among them was that 18-year-old Stefan Bacjcectic superbly played cool and pulled strings in the middle of the park. The young midfielder was praised for his work rate and it is assumed he may be the answer to the Liverpool woes they have faced recently with an aging midfield department.

Stefan Bacjcectic ( red ) of Liverpool.

As if not enough, a new signing who came in through the January transfer window, Cody Gakpo finally managed to score his first goal in six games. The beauty of it all was not scoring but in the manner of scoring- like the old Liverpool way – counter-attack football passed via the wing.

Famous football pundit and Sky Sports TV host, Jamie Carragher spoke admirably of his former side which he represented as a defender:

“ Klopp has just got to hope Liverpool can now go on and try to make some sort of fight for that top-four position. Could they have a Champions League run? Sometimes one big result in a big game can spark something.

The magnitude of the win has led some pundits to claim that Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool still has a shot at Champions League places. Currently, the Reds sit 9 with 9 points separating them from fourth-placed Newcastle United. With a number of teams facing a dip in the form here and there, it is yet to be seen if Liverpool can capitalize on this and make it to Champions League football.

He was hailed as the king of soccer, but it was Pelé’s other nickname — the Pérola Negra, or Black Pearl — that best evoked the rare brilliance he packed into his diminutive frame.

Pele, who for decades staked a claim as the world’s most celebrated athlete, died Thursday at a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. He was 82.

The cause was complications from colon cancer, said his manager Joe Fraga. Pelé’s eminence in soccer spanned three decades during which he helped Brazil win World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Quick, agile, adept with both feet, and laserlike with his headers, Pelé was built for scoring and blessed with a jazz master’s improvisational skills on the soccer pitch.

“First time I’m hearing this, it’s news to me.” ” Why isn’t Pelé’s visit to Uganda talked about that much? “
Those are some of the comments from some of the Ugandan football enthusiasts of the young generations after viewing a video of Pele’s visit to Uganda in 1976 on social media.

Who doubts Pelé ever stepped foot in Uganda? In reality, February 5, 1976, is the day the former Brazilian football legend jetted in at Entebbe to embark on a three-day tour of Uganda to promote the development of youth football.

Pelé and Iddi Amin

Playing for the New York Cosmos at the time, Pele’s trip was sponsored by Pepsi, and thousands of Ugandans turned up to get a glimpse of the football idol. Interestingly, Pele’s visit to Uganda was not planned in advance; the legend, who had toured several African countries with Kenya being his last stop before flying back to the US, was convinced to visit Uganda at the eleventh hour.
“I was contacted by Kenya Football Fe

duration (KFF) boss Kenneth Matiba whether Uganda was ready to receive him [Pele], to which I said why not,” recalls Era Mugisa, who was Fufa and Cecafa’s boss at the time.

At Entebbe, Pele was received by NCS boss Ernest Oluo, NCS general secretary Martin Okoth and Mugisa. The following day, Fufa organized a football gala comprising school teams from King’s College Budo, Kololo SS, Lubaga Boys, and Old Kampala SS as well as a select team from the central region youth sides. However, before kickoff, Pele gave pep talks to all the youngsters and was later featured in group photos with each of the teams.

Pele, who made the first kick before the commencement of play, was greatly impressed by the skills exhibited by the youngsters and acknowledged every good pass with a clap.
“Uganda is on the right track in football development and you should stick to this kind of arrangement of encouraging players at a young age,” he said afterward.

One of the participating youngsters was Fred Musisi Kiyingi, who remembers the day with a tinge of pride. “It was a historical moment for me being part of the Kololo SS team,” says the Daily Monitor journalist.

On February 7, Fufa organized another match between topflight sides Coffee and Uganda Prisons (Maroons). Before the game, there was speculation that Pele would showcase his extraordinary skills at half-time.
This only served to heighten the interest in the match and by 2 pm, Nakivubo was full to capacity.

But what was supposed to be an interesting match turned out to be a boring game as all the 22 players on the pitch tried hard to impress the Brazilian, who seemed to be unimpressed by the level of football displayed.

To this day, it remains a mystery why Fufa opted for teams renowned for dull football tactics instead of giants like Express and KCC. The fans also expected a showdown between Uganda Cranes which was preparing for the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations and the Uganda Lions (Uganda second strings side) which had just returned from China where they played build-up games.

It didn’t help matters at halftime when Pele’s limousine left the stadium. Angry fans hurled jeers toward the pavilion where officials sat. Indeed, many fans rushed for the exits as a handful stayed to a dull goalless draw.
