When Iddi Amin Hosted The Late Pele In Uganda: In a shocking sequence of events that stunned the world, former president of Uganda Idi Amin once hosted the famous Brazilian footballer Pele. Mysterious and fascinating, the meeting occurred in the 1970s, during the tumultuous regime of Amin.

The legendary Pele, widely considered the best football player of all time, was reportedly invited to visit Uganda by President Amin in 1973. The public was taken aback by this surprising pairing, as Pele had no prior experience with politics.

Political upheaval and human rights abuses typical of Amin’s regime provided a somber background for the occasion. Even though the world community was worried, Pele’s visit put Uganda at the forefront.

The clandestine meeting between Amin and Pele is shrouded in mystery, and nothing is known about the discussions that occurred there. As far as anyone could tell, Amin—who identified himself as a football fan—was eager to cash in on Pele’s star power to boost his foreign profile.

Pele was welcomed by the Ugandan government with a spectacular ceremony to commence his stay. Traditional music, dance, and greetings were offered to the football player as a token of Ugandan hospitality. Images of Pele, dressed in traditional Ugandan attire, attending the occasion, and going viral captured the essence of this unique gathering.

Iddi Aman & Pele

Questions about Pele’s role remained, even in the celebratory event. Was it a genuine meeting of two individuals from different worlds, or was there some ulterior political motive? The situation became even more shrouded in mystery due to the lack of clarity, which stoked speculation.

When Iddi Amin Hosted The Late Pele In Uganda

One of the few verified consequences of the conference is a friendly football match between a squad headed by Pele and one prepared by Amin. As a diversion from the country’s political issues, the national stadium hosted a massive audience for the game.

The football player was immediately the target of criticism from worldwide media outlets after Pele’s visit due to his association with a leader accused of human rights violations. Pele maintained, nonetheless, that spreading compassion and highlighting football’s global appeal were the sole objectives of his visit.

Despite the passage of time. The meeting of Idi Amin and Pele remains a peculiarity in the history of politics and athletics. The true motivations behind this unexpected alliance remain a mystery to many. Who are captivated by archival images and tales from that time.

As we reflect on the past, the meeting between Pele and Amin. They serve as a reminder of the complex web of connections between politics and sports. As well as the far-reaching consequences of public figures’ choices.

KAMULI, UGANDA: Waiswa Abdallah Katende is wanted by the territorial police in the Kamuli area on suspicion of killing a 7-year-old boy by strangling him after failing to obtain the three million shilling ransom he demanded from his parents.

Isabirye John, 7, a son of Mr. Muwodi Robert, a resident of Bulungu zone, Busimba Ward, Namwendwa Town council in Kamuli district, was recognized by police as the 7-year-old boy killed.

It is alleged that the deceased went missing on Sunday night, and it later came to be known that he had been kidnapped by Waiswa Abdallah (who was someone unknown at that time) according to the Regional Police spokesperson of Busoga North by the name of ASP Kasadha Micheal.

Research carried out by the police indicates that Waiswa found the victim at the community borehole at around 08:00 PM and took him to an unknown place before he started making calls demanding a ransom of Shs 3m from the parents of Isabirye (deceased)

Kasadha the police spokesperson says Katended went on demanding for ransom until yesterday (Monday morning) when he succeeded after negotiating the fee to the figure of Ugandan Shs 50000 and this was raised and sent by the community.

“Having sent the money, the concerned residents started pleading with Waiswa and asking for the possible recovery of the minor. Unfortunately, the first attempt did not yield as he gave them the wrong information. It was after a series of engagements that he directed him to the nearby sugarcane plantation in the same area where they found the boy killed with signs of strangulation,” said ASP Kasadha in a Monday evening police statement made.

On discovering the minor’s lifeless body, the district community Liaison officer had just arrived on the ground to engage the residents who were threatening and ready to destroy the home of Semakula Isma, father to the suspect.

7 year Old boy Killed

Kasadha urged members of the public who could be having information that can lead to the arrest of Waiswa Abudallah Katende to avail it to the police as investigations and a manhunt for the suspect intensifies.

At the time of filing all stories, the deceased’s body was conveyed to Kamuli general hospital mortuary for an autopsy report and from there it will later be handed to the family for the burial process. May John’s soul rest in peace.

The man who shot and wounded Lady Gaga’s dog walker while stealing her French bulldogs last year took a plea deal and was sentenced to 21 years in prison on Monday, officials said.
The Lady Gaga connection was a coincidence, authorities have said. The motive was the value of the French bulldogs, a breed that can run into the thousands of dollars, and detectives do not believe the thieves knew the dogs belonged to the musician.

James Howard Jackson, one of three men and two accomplices who participated in the violent robbery and its aftermath, pleaded no contest to one count of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. It was not immediately clear which attorney represented Howard on Monday.

The pop star’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was seriously wounded in the attack and addressed the court Monday to give an impact statement, which he posted on Instagram.“It’s hard to believe that it’s nearing two years since I was taking Asia, Koji and Gustav out for an evening stroll when — in an instant — I suddenly found myself fighting with everything I had to protect those dogs from being stolen. But it wasn’t enough: I was beaten, strangled, shot and left to die bleeding out on a sidewalk and gasping for my life. And Koji and Gustav were gone.”Jackson and two others drove around Hollywood, the city of West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley on Feb. 24, 2021 “looking for French bulldogs,” prosecutors said previously. They found Fischer with the pop star’s three pets.

Jackson shot Fischer during the robbery off the famed Sunset Boulevard, during which two of the dogs were taken. A nearby doorbell camera recorded the dog walker screaming “Oh, my God! I’ve been shot!” and “Help me!” and “I’m bleeding out from my chest!”

Fischer later called the violence a “very close call with death” in social media posts. In his statement Monday, he said he is still healing physically and mentally from the shooting. Part of his lung had to be removed and he is still undergoing physical therapy.

Fischer also addressed Jackson directly in the statement, and said he forgives him and the others involved in the attack. “You completely altered my life, and I know I can’t fully move forward from the night you shot me until I said those words to you.”

The stolen dogs were returned several days later by Jennifer McBride, who was also charged in the crime. The pop star had offered a $500,000 reward — “no questions asked” — to be reunited with the dogs at the time.

Jackson also admitted the allegation of inflicting great bodily injury and to a prior strike, the DA’s office said Monday. The prosecutor’s office did not immediately say what the prior strike was.

“The plea agreement holds Mr. Jackson accountable for perpetrating a coldhearted violent act and provides justice for our victim,” the office said in a statement. Howard had been charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a robbery and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Jackson was mistakenly released from jail earlier this year due to a clerical error. He was recaptured nearly five months later.

Another accomplice, Harold White, pleaded no contest Monday to a count of ex-convict in possession of a gun. White, who was in a relationship with McBride at the time, will be sentenced next year. McBride’s case is ongoing.

The couple had allegedly tried to help White’s son, Jaylin White, avoid arrest in the aftermath of the shooting.

Jaylin White and Lafayette Whaley earlier this year pleaded no contest to robbery.

Whaley drove Jackson and the younger White around last year as they searched for the pricy dogs. Jackson and White jumped out and attacked Fischer, prosecutors said previously. They hit and choked the dog walker, and Jackson pulled out a semiautomatic gun and fired, striking Fischer once before the trio fled.

Lady Gaga’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

What you need to know:Stakeholders say organising music concerts is not for the faint-hearted because even factors outside one’s control such as weather can either make or break you, Gabriel Buule writes. The question around the cost of organising a music concert in Uganda has in recent times become pertinent. This follows the spike in music concerts organised in the country following the full reopening of the economy in January after a Covid-19 pandemic-induced lull.

Andrew Jedidiah Ssebaggala, the production manager of Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC), can claim to have an answer. UNCC runs a venue that needs no introduction to Ugandan creatives— the National Theatre.

Ssebaggala, who is also involved in booking space at, among others, the National Theatre’s auditorium, says there are a couple of dynamics involved in organising a music concert.

When you choose to stage your concert at the National Theatre’s auditorium, for instance, Ssebaggala says the venue fees will grant you access to changing rooms, the green room and inbuilt resources like the chairs, lights, stage and simple sound.

A producer and an arts group manager, Ssebaggala further explains that to turn in a profit, art —much like any business—requires sound investment and accountability.

Juvenile Unik Mugisha, an event’s organiser and a music manager, who recently held a successful concert for singer Shafik Walukagga, alias Fik Fameica, told Sunday Monitor that—on average—one needs Shs150 million to organise a mega music concert in Kampala.Mugisha said the money is channelled to production, advertising, security, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), police, National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and venue fees. He further added that—on average—an outdoor venue for a massive concert can cost anywhere between Shs20 million to Shs25 million, depending on days of preparation, size and negotiations.Deliverables

The venue and production consume a disproportionate part of the money, with an organiser—on average—spending Shs30 million on production at venues such as Lugogo Oval and Freedom City. But before that, there are legal and technical hurdles one must jump to stage a music concert.

orothy Nabunjo, an events promoter and talent manager, explains that taking legal precautions is especially of great utility. She also reveals that before tying down a venue, one ought to have Shs100,000 ring-fenced for securing police permission. They also need to be in close contact with the police, who usually run the rule over security at a venue, as well as carry out sweeps using bomb detectors at the Police K9 unit. The area police commander and anti-terrorism police also should be on speed dial.

The size of the venue and expected attendance determine the police bill as per Mugisha. Security for venues such as Lugogo Oval will always triple the fees that someone pays for Sheraton Gardens or an indoor venue. In all, security can cost an organiser Shs5 million.
Elsewhere, KCCA requires the organiser to present a formal letter requesting to hold the event, security arrangement, notification from the police by attaching a police letter, clearance from venue owners, fire control strategy and human traffic flow and control. Other requirements include first aid facilities, toilets with clear demarcation of male and female, waste management, noise management kept at 60 decibels, among others.

An advertising banner placed anywhere in Kampala attracts a daily fee of Shs10,000. Nema also gets anywhere between Shs100,000 and Shs150,000. The taxman also slaps organisers with an 18 percent charge in taxes after the concert.

Delicate balance

Past experiences show that staging a music concert is touch-and-go. Top Boy Entertainment records burnt its records in early November during its inaugural concert. The local events group hoped to make a kill when its so-called Big Show listed a who’s who, including Jamaican artiste Beenie Man, Nigerian Afro-pop star Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman alias Oxlade, among others.

The show, however, was deemed to have gone south on account of a low turn-up at the venue. To cap things, Oxlade reportedly refused to perform, thanks to unpaid dues.

“Promoters need to learn to do the right thing when booking artistes. You invite an artiste to come and perform at your event, you were given a booking agreement, which you duly signed, then you refuse to honour your own part of the contract and refuse to pay me as at when due,” Oxlade later said in a video posted to Instagram.

In a statement, the organisers revealed that they invested a whopping $300,000 (Shs1.1b) into putting together the concert. Losses were incurred, they added, because of counterfeit tickets, mismanagement and middlemen in the business.

Brave heartMugisha says organising music concerts is not for the faint-hearted. A lot rides on ticket sales. Factors outside one’s control such as weather can either make or break you. The stakes are even higher when dealing with international artistes, who don’t entertain voluntary pay cuts or rescheduling performances.

“You have to spend a lot of money on posters, social media influencers, newsprint, television and radio if you are targeting a huge audience,” he advises, adding that the load can be lightened when a deal is made with companies that offer prepaid advertising space in the form of sponsorship.
Recent figures released after the Uganda Bureau of Statistics re-based the economy show that the entertainment industry grew by 30 percent in 2016/2017. This worked to a contribution of about Shs141.5b from the entertainment sub-sector to the economy. Collectively, the services sector, where entertainment belongs, contributes Shs47.1 trillion to Uganda’s economy.

The world has seen a lot of technological advances and among which is cryptocurrency. Many have rushed to invest. Envisioning great profits ahead.FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried is now seen as a US Crypto fraud set to face a 115-year sentence.

The story so far: In 2019, Bankman-Fried and his colleague Gary Wang founded FTX Trading Ltd. The company by then operated a cryptocurrency exchange and crypto hedge fund.

Since the world seems to be in a frenzy to invest in anything crypto, a number of people joined FTX. In fact, by the year 2021, the company boosted a massive one million users.

However, not all that glitters is gold. News reaching Brayz Media desk shows that the 30-year-old has been accused of embezzling billions of dollars from investors.FTX is now a bankrupt company.

FTX is now a bankrupt company.

On Tuesday, Bankman-Fried appearing in court pleaded not guilty. This is a contrast to what some of his work colleagues say. They actually attest to the fact that there was embezzlement and defrauding of investors.

The actual and final hearing of the case is set for October 2 this year. If proven guilty, Bankman-Fried could face 115 years in prison for committing fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Crypto Fraud in Uganda

In February 2022 Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Directorate ( CID ) arrested one John Mwanutsya for a case similar to Bankman-Fried’s. Mwanutsya, like Bankman-Fried, defrauded Ugandans of over Shs 3 Billion.

Apparently, Mwanutsya, the director of a crypto firm known as Crypto Bridge African Limited recruited and sold virtual shares to members. These digital transactions happened between 2018 – 2020.

As you are already aware of the crypto frenzy, a number of people joined in. They invested and waited for profits only to hear that the company had closed permanently.

A number of such individuals and companies are still around. The CID Spokesperson by then, Charles Twine advised Ugandans that they should know that transactions of cryptocurrency in Uganda are not regulated by any institution or any legal framework.

Agnes Namugabo, a housemaid has been arrested on allegations of stealing and attempting to sell off her boss’ 3-year-old daughter for Shs 3 million.
Namugabo, who is currently in custody at Jinja central police station was arrested from the Mailo-Mbili roundabout stage en route to Kidera town council in Buyende district on Saturday night to sell off the minor.

Her boss, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, says that Namugabo disappeared with the minor from Bombo military barracks on Friday evening and switched off her known mobile phone numbers. As a result, the boss teamed up with the Bombo military barracks leadership and police to mount a search for the house help and the minor. The suspect who has since confessed to the crime blames her boss for delayed payment and maltreatment, which had forced her to sell off the child in revenge.

“My friends in the village convinced me that, they would easily get me market to sell off the child in Kidera town council and I would be ferried via lake Kyoga to a safe hideout in Serere district,” she said.

Kiira Regional police spokesperson, James Mubi says that Namugabo was tracked down through the police security cameras and GPS technology. He says that using CCTV footage, police first sighted the suspect at Kampala city-based Nakawa-Spears stage while boarding a commuter taxi en route to Jinja city.

According to Mubi, this prompted detectives to alert traffic police personnel at the different points along the Jinja-Kampala highway who kept inspecting commuter taxis looking out for the minor. Mubi says that four plain-cloth officers intercepted the suspect who had since pitched camp at the Mailo-Mbili roundabout along the Jinja-Kamuli road.

Mubi also says that police also managed to rescue 2½-year-old, Skyler Linda, who was reportedly kidnapped from her home in Budhumbuli West in Jinja City Northern division. According to Mubi, the minor went missing on December 8, 2022, while in the custody of her 16-year-old sister. Kidnappers threatened to kill the minor if her parents failed to pay a ransom of Shs 40 million.

According to Mubi, the minor was rescued from a commuter taxi along the Jinja-Kampala highway, following a tipoff from passengers who raised a distress call when they became suspicious of two middle-aged men who were seen with the missing girl. However, the suspects managed to get away when they realized the police had cornered them.

Mubi has advised parents and guardians to be cautious about the safety and well-being of their children since several evil-minded individuals are targeting to kidnap them for ransom or ritual purposes. Kiira region police now pride in the rescue of five children in one year. The other children are Bushira Mugoya who was rescued in December 2021, Divine Namuganza in February 2022, and Shafiq Ssemambo in November 2022.

  • Bongo Flava star Harmonize has apologised over his collaboration with Jamaican singer Konshens in a their single ‘Weed Language’.

Harmonize remarks came few hours after the Commissioner General of the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), Gerald Kusaya, summoned artists over promotion of drug use.

Without mentioning the name, Kusaya said the authority will investigate the artist and if any found breaching the laws stern action to be taken against them as an example to other people.

“Can’t you sing even songs to promote agriculture” the commissioner asked while addressing journalist in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday December 8, 2022.

The Bongo Flava star also had a meeting with the National Arts Council (Basata) before apologising

In a statement posted on his social media platforms, the Konde Gang CEO said he would no longer be on his social media platforms as he promised to be an ambassador of clean content.

“The general leadership of Konde Gang Music worldwide is apologizing over the content of my latest song ‘Weed Language,” he said.
