Numerous opportunities have emerged for many people as a result of the growth of social media in Uganda and abroad.

Social media eased communication among people in the most convenient way ever. People can communicate with friends and family from whichever part of the world at a very small fee. The world is now more connected than it was 15 years ago—all thanks to social media.

For starters, social media refers to websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Social network includes applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat, and so on. People use all these applications to communicate and watch videos for fun. Social media is also used to market people’s products and marketing has been made so easy.

Apart from communication, social media is also used for entertainment and fun. Various people post lots of funny pictures, videos, and messages which help to relieve stressful people. There is a game of numbers on social media where those with the most significant number of followers are the ones that are considered big on the various platforms.

There are people who have followers in excess of 1 million followers. For example, Robert kyagulanyi Sentamu (Bobi Wine) has 1.9 million followers on Twitter and over 1 million on Facebook. President Museveni has 2.9 million followers on Twitter. Many other people
have tens of thousands of followers on their platforms as well.

It is therefore these huge numbers of followers on social media that have attracted various corporate companies to come and tap into this huge potential market. As a result, companies such as those dealing in insurance, Petroleum, soft drinks, Alcohol, banks, schools, restaurants, and so on, have tapped into this market by picking up famous people on social media just to market their products. This gave
birth to a new group of people called “Influencers”

“Influencers” are people who can influence potential buyers of a product or service by promoting or recommending the items on social media. Because there are many famous people on social media, companies have picked them up to influence them. People like A PASS who influences SAMS products, UNCLE MO who influences Guinness beer, Prudential, and OMO, Mikey seems 2 funny, and many others have enjoyed money coming from company endorsements.

Below is a video of one of the most popular social media Influencers Mikey Seems 2 funny after winning an award as the funniest on TikTok 2022

However, many Influencers in Uganda, have not been paid their worth by companies. Companies realized loopholes among these social media celebrities, and this was a lack of professionalism. Since many of them are overnight celebrities, they don’t care about being professional as they deal with corporate companies and so they end up being paid peanuts to endorse and influence multi-million companies. In the end, these companies outsmart them.

Many social media influencers do not have managers and lawyers to guide them and read for them contracts in case they get an endorsement deal. As a result, they simply put pen to paper as long as they are earning money. This was a problem common among Uganda musicians but many have since improved. Whenever one doesn’t properly understand their contract, it is the company that benefits more.

Some of the social media influencers are only famous on social media for dancing around, making short skits, motivational speaking, etc without clear jobs or talents and so any money that is paid to them is ok for them. This is a loophole that big corporate companies are exploiting. They pay less money for more. An influencer who has 100,000 followers on TikTok to accept a deal of 1 million shillings to influence a product for 3 months is so little. It means they make about 330k a month, but because they have no specific jobs apart from dancing on social media, they will take this money up, and the company benefits more.

Companies also find it cheap and convenient to pay social media influencers other than getting a brand ambassador. Brand ambassadors are more exposed and charge more money than an average social media influencer. Therefore a company will prefer to use an influencer as Opposed to brand ambassadors to market its products or services.

I conclude by saying that social media influencers should work on branding themselves more, properly reading their contracts of endorsements, and knowing their worth vis a-vis the brand they are endorsing. This is how they will make more money from their work and fame. The good thing is that now anyone can earn an endorsement from a company and make money unlike previously when endorsements were a preserve of musicians, top sportsmen or film actors, and a few comedians. Bless you.

They is a famous adage that says that no matter how rich one is, money can not buy everything. There have been a lot of controversies since the world’s former richest man acquired Twitter. From firing key administrators to laying off hundreds of employees, Twitter is yet to see the real face of its new owner.

Apparently, a lot of Elon Musk Tweets and replies are showing up in users’ ‘ For You Page’ prompting the question “ is Twitter forcefully showing Users Elon Musk Tweets? “

Incidentally, the huge number of Elon Musk showing in users’ ‘ For You Page’ is happening days after the billionaire complained that his tweets weren’t getting enough views. This was followed by one of the top engineers being fired over the same issue – Musk’s Tweets not getting enough views. Can you imagine such a scenario?

Screenshot shot showing Elon Musk Tweet

This may lead to one asking: is it a must that if Elon Musk is the owner of Twitter then his Tweets should have the most views and likes? No. Absolutely no. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has had posts on Facebook that have not received much reception in terms of views and likes. Does this mean Facebook should start pushing Mark Zuckerberg’s posts to every user like the way Twitter is doing?

Mark Zuckerberg

Elon Musk running Twitter like his personal fiefdom

“Despite promising to make Twitter a space for sharing free speech, Elon Musk has had more controversial issues that have delineated him from that notion. All his acts have been like one of the age-old feudal lords. He “ the social media platform like a medieval nobleman lording over his own personal fiefdom .”

Writing for Al Jazeera, Khaled Diab says that “ the tech billionaire clearly believes he knows everything better than everyone else at Twitter.” He forgets that the platform was already doing well in the first place. That is why he wanted to acquire it . Because it was well run and well because it could be profitable for him to invest in his money.

The billionaire clearly believes he knows everything better than everyone else on Twitter

The most dangerous thing as Diab notes is that Elon Musk is one of those many billionaires who seem to run and control mult-billion corporations that have an effect on the rest of us. He says these billionaires “ decide whose voice gets amplified and who is banned from the commercialized end of the public sphere, which is rapidly expanding.”

This is a very worrying pattern. In an era where the world is going all digital, those with unprecedented power and control over these spaces will be vital in deciding what and when our world will be or go. There is a lot more to come from Elon Musk and one can only pray it is not in justification of the fears of Khaled Diab.

TikTok will be banned in the USA despite its widespread use because it “operates as a sophisticated monitoring tool.”

TikTok is one of the most liked social networking apps, receiving 4.4 out of 5 stars from over 54 million users on the Google Play Store.

Former USA President Donald Trump together with his administration in late 2020 declared that they would be banning TikTok due to security threats. However, the move did not materialize.

Down the road, with a new President and administration in place, the USA has come to the realization that TikTok has to be banned. The belief that the Chinese government is using the app to spy on Americans is more real than ever.

Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) Commissioner, Brendan Carr, warned that TikTok “ operates as a sophisticated surveillance tool “ adding that a ban on the app would be a “ natural step in our efforts to secure communications network .”

Last week the US banned TikTok on all House ( The US House of Representatives ) managed devices. The move by US state governments is based on fears that Tik Tok could collect data thus allowing the Chinese government to spy on Americans. More efforts are being made to ensure that the app is banned nationwide.

Banning TikTok is Not a New Thing…

A ban on Tik Tok is not a new thing to the short-form video hosting service owned by Chinese Company Bytedance. A number of countries have come up with bans on the app for almost similar reasons.

TikTok is a short-form video hosting service owned by the Chinese Company Bytedance.

India is notable for banning Tik Tok both in 2019 and 2020. By then the app boosted a mouth-watering number of over 200 million monthly active users in India. Issues cited for the ban were: “ showing inappropriate content “, “ encouraging pornography “ and “protecting the data and privacy of its 1.3 billion citizens.”

Surprisingly, even China itself banned Tik Tok. However, a Chinese version of the same app known as Douyin produced by the same company is being used by the Chinese. This is another reason why Tik Tok is not trusted. Why have the same app in two versions, one for China and the other for the rest of the world?

Earlier last year April 2022, Afghanistan banned TikTok for “ misleading the younger generation”. The Islamic State added that Tik Tok content was not consistent with Islamic laws.

The other countries to have banned Tik Tok include: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Iran, Jordan, Pakistan among others.

Crysto Panda narrates how depression affected him through social media trolls.

From disengagement to persecution, we are not good at regulating our psychological health as Ugandans in entertainment.

Depression may simply be the flip side of the creative manic state, the price artists pay for their bouts of productive work.

The notion that depression and other forms of mental illness go hand-in-hand with creativity is so prevalent that it gave rise to the terms “tortured artist” and “mad artist.” But is this idea just a stereotype, or does it actually contain a grain of truth?

Painters such as Vincent van Gogh, who famously cut off his ear and ultimately took his life in 1890, contribute to this idea, as does the writer Sylvia Plath, who died by suicide in 1963. Both artists detailed their mental illnesses in writing.

Last week, TV personality-turned-singer Crysto Panda opened up about depression in an interview with KFM’s Lynda Ddane. Panda, who was invited as a guest explained how he struggled to get back on his feet after reading negative stories about him.

The now healed and vibrant musician explained that his situation worsened after he lost his baby in 2020, forcing him into isolation. The singer later decided to take a social media break in a bid to silence the negative voices.

“When you are depressed there’s a certain type of way you feel. You feel like nobody likes you, every time you ask, ‘Why me?’” Panda said.

“If you feel like you are not in your right state of mind, please switch off your accounts [social media]. That time when I was off, I actually got to know who I am better than before. I got to know my real people,” he added.

However, the singer says he managed to bounce back after watching clips of young children dancing to his music. Besides his fans, Panda was also encouraged by his friends who kept checking on him to see whether he was fine.

In his advice to people suffering from depression, Panda urged them to turn to God, explaining how reading Bible verses turned his life around. The singer also advised them to do what they love, just like he resorted to recording back-to-back hits, weeks after losing his daughter.

On social media trolls, Panda said, “Before you attack someone on social media, ask yourself what am I gaining from attacking this person?”

Musically speaking, the singer said he has a couple of tracks set to be released before officially unveiling his newest dance tune, ‘Empele’. He says the song was inspired by his childhood dance strokes dubbed Empele. The trending dance song has seen a number of TikTokers record clips dancing Empele moves.

Crysto Panda is a renowned TV presenter at the Nation Media Group-owned NTV Uganda.
