The Director General of Health Services, Prof. Charles Olaro, has emphasized the need for Ugandans to prioritize preventive healthcare, warning that many deaths occurring before the age of 70 can be avoided.
Speaking on the importance of prevention, Prof. Olaro noted that most premature deaths are caused by preventable non-communicable diseases, urging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Any death before the age of 70 is considered premature, and most are caused by preventable non-communicable diseases. We must change our mindset and recognize that health is wealth and worth protecting.
Prof. Olaro also highlighted the government’s continued investment in strengthening the country’s healthcare system through improved infrastructure and increased staffing.
Upgrading health facilities has been one of the country’s key strategic investments. Alongside improving infrastructure, we have expanded human resources, recognizing that structures alone cannot deliver quality healthcare.
He stressed that prevention remains the foundation of a strong health system, saying the ultimate goal is to keep people healthy rather than treating illnesses after they occur.
Our greatest strength will always remain prevention. Success is not measured by the number of people visiting health facilities, but by keeping communities healthy and reducing the need for treatment.
Addressing the country’s response to disease outbreaks, Prof. Olaro said Uganda has built a resilient health system capable of managing emergencies while maintaining essential health services.
Our response to the outbreak reflects the strength and resilience we have built over time. Controlling it is key to ensuring other essential services continue despite the disruption.
