Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has called on Ugandans to actively demand accountability from the government, saying the responsibility of fighting corruption extends beyond political leaders.
While addressing leaders at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Ssenyonyi said every Ugandan taxpayer has a duty to speak out whenever public funds are misused.
He stressed that holding leaders accountable is not solely the responsibility of the opposition, but a civic obligation shared by all citizens whose taxes finance government operations.
“As the Leader of the Opposition, I am duty-bound to hold this government accountable, together with my colleagues. But that responsibility does not end with us as leaders. Every Ugandan has the same duty. Why? Because as a Ugandan, you are a taxpayer. So if your tax money is being stolen, you have a duty to speak out against corruption. No one should try to shut you up. No. Because you are duty-bound and you are a stakeholder,” Ssenyonyi said.
Ssenyonyi has consistently positioned accountability, transparency and the fight against corruption among his key priorities as Leader of the Opposition.
Through parliamentary debates, press briefings and public engagements, he has frequently criticized what he describes as failures in governance and has called for stronger oversight of public resources.
His remarks at the NUP headquarters come amid ongoing national discussions about public accountability, government expenditure and efforts to combat corruption in Uganda.
