State Minister for Microfinance, Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, has called on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to issue an Executive Order imposing a temporary ban on the externalisation of labour.

Kasolo said the suspension would give the government enough time to conduct a comprehensive review of labour recruitment companies and assess their operations and intentions amid growing concerns over the welfare of Ugandans working abroad.

“We need an Executive Order imposing a temporary ban on the externalisation of labour to allow for a thorough review of recruitment companies and their intentions,” Kasolo said.

His remarks come as concerns continue to mount over the increasing number of Ugandans stranded in foreign countries after being lured with promises of better employment opportunities.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also expressed concern over the plight of Ugandans trapped in Cambodia, revealing that about 525 Ugandans are currently stranded in the Southeast Asian country.

According to Nabbanja, many of the affected Ugandans have been persistently reaching out to her, appealing for government intervention to facilitate their return home.

“We have 525 Ugandans stranded in Cambodia. They are constantly calling me, asking for government support,” the Prime Minister said.

The calls for tighter regulation of labour export companies come amid increasing reports of Ugandans facing exploitation, abuse, and difficult working conditions in several foreign countries.
