Makerere University has launched a formal investigation into senior lecturer Dr Faisal Buyinza following allegations by his former wife, Hanifah Nakiryowa, linking him to a 2011 acid attack and claims of harassment during her time as a student.
The university said Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has constituted a committee to examine the allegations in line with Makerere’s safeguarding, sexual harassment and staff disciplinary policies.
The move follows renewed public attention to Nakiryowa’s allegations, which she recently raised on social media. Makerere had faced criticism over its initial response to the claims.
Nakiryowa alleges that Buyinza arranged for her to be attacked with acid in December 2011, following the breakdown of their marriage. She sustained serious facial injuries, while her young daughter was also injured in the attack.
Buyinza was later arrested and charged with attempted murder but denied the allegations. The case was discontinued in July 2014 after the prosecution failed to produce key witnesses.

The discontinuation of the case did not amount to a judicial finding that Nakiryowa’s allegations were false, and the allegations have remained disputed.
Nakiryowa has also accused Buyinza of abusing his position while she was his student, including allegedly using her academic results to pressure her into a relationship. These claims have not been independently established.
Makerere said the newly appointed committee will conduct the inquiry expeditiously and submit its findings to the Vice Chancellor.
For now, the university has not announced any findings against Buyinza or indicated whether he will be suspended while the investigation is ongoing.
