President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged UGX 2 billion to establish a SACCO for Ugandans repatriated from South Africa.
In the same spirit, added them UGX 2 million in cash for each returnee to help them rebuild their lives.
The President made the announcement during his visit to Kyankwanzi, where he presided over the pass-out ceremony of Ugandan returnees from South Africa who completed a rehabilitation and ideological orientation program at the National Leadership Institute (NALI).
Addressing the returnees, Museveni urged them to embrace the opportunities available in Uganda instead of seeking greener pastures abroad.
Africa’s enemies want to see us fighting. South Africans also have businesses in Uganda, and our enemies would want us to retaliate, but that will not happen. I have spoken to President Ramaphosa, and we shall begin the process of compensating those who lost property.
The President also cautioned Ugandans against being lured overseas with promises of lucrative jobs, insisting that Uganda offers enough opportunities for its citizens.
Those taking you abroad for work are misleading you. Uganda has everything you need. For me, spending more than two days in America feels like punishment.
Speaking on behalf of the returnees, one participant expressed gratitude for the rehabilitation program, saying it had transformed their perspective on life and opportunities in Uganda.
Many of us left Uganda in search of better opportunities abroad, believing success could only be found outside the country. Our experience at NALI has opened our eyes to the enormous opportunities available at home. We now better appreciate your vision.
The financial support is expected to help the returnees reintegrate into society through entrepreneurship, savings, and income-generating activities as they begin a new chapter back home.
