Ugandan comedian-turned-pastor Sammy Okanya has reportedly spent three days in detention at Katwe Police Station over allegations that he borrowed $10,000 from a Sudanese national and failed to repay the money.
Reports surrounding his arrest indicate that Okanya allegedly obtained the funds to support religious activities, including preaching, organising crusades, travelling abroad to spread the gospel and conducting further biblical research.
The money was reportedly intended to help him deepen his understanding of scripture and share his religious knowledge with communities in Kayunga District.
However, details surrounding the alleged loan, including when the money was borrowed and the agreed repayment terms, remain unclear.
Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala reportedly confirmed Okanya’s arrest, saying he was among several suspects apprehended during police operations targeting alleged lawbreakers.
Kawala added that the screening of those arrested was ongoing, with some suspects expected to be released on police bond as investigations continued.
It remains unclear whether Okanya will be formally charged in connection with the alleged debt or released as police conclude their inquiries.
Former comedian Sammy Okanya of Da Mighty Family has reportedly been in prison since Sunday.
