Local Government Minist Hon. Balaam Barugahara Atenyi her as called for a review of salaries for district political leaders, arguing that the current pay structure creates a significant disparity between elected leaders and senior civil servants they supervise.
Balaam noted that an LC V chairperson earns less than Shs 5 million, yet oversees a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) whose monthly salary is reportedly above Shs 12 million.
He argued that the disparity should be addressed to ensure lower-level elected leaders are adequately facilitated to perform their responsibilities.
“We need to review district politicians’ salaries. An LC V earns less than Shs 5 million while supervising a CAO earning over Shs 12 million. If necessary, let’s reduce ministers’ and MPs’ salaries to support lower-level leaders,” Balaam said.
His remarks have reignited the debate over remuneration and welfare of local government leaders and whether government should reconsider the current salary structure across the different levels of administration.
