Ganda boys have come out to say that people who do not have any knowledge about music, or those that have very little knowledge or experience about music, should avoid talking about it in public spaces, to avoid exposing their ignorance.

The Ganda boys said this while they had been hosted by Miles Rwamiti at the industrial area-based Urban Television, an affiliate of Vision Group.

“Ganda boys” are a UK – based fusion band which is made up of Dennis Mugagga and Dan Ssewagudde with popular record producer and organizer, Craig Pruess. Originally, they were only two singers in a duo they named “Da Twins” and together they released many hit songs including “Ba midomo midomo” released in the early 2000s. They released their music while staying in the UK and could only come to Uganda for visits.

After some time, they rebranded and added Craig Pruess to their group which became “Ganda boys,” a name they still hold today. With the changing of their band name, came a change in the style of music that they started releasing.

They started recording more traditional music, fusing traditional instruments, and inculcating their cultural norms into their songs. According to the Ganda boys, they also produced and re-mastered the songs that they had done earlier.

When they were asked for their view on artists who pay DJs for their music to be played, the Ganda boys said that musicians here have to concentrate on doing very good music, they have to work with extremely talented producers and they should invest in their craft. They also said that a bad song cannot be forced onto the people, no matter how it is promoted. Therefore Good music promotes itself and will always reign.

They also retorted their concerns about the increasing number of artists who masquerade as the authority on Ugandan music, even when their music is clearly average. They said that if one person succeeds in one genre of music, then they think that they are the best at music, a thing which is so dangerous. They called on such people to only focus on their genres of music and not cross to areas where they are not professionals.

The Ganda boys called upon musicians to pay extra attention to detail when they are doing their craft as this is the only way through which they will release quality music. They also had no kind words for event promoters who dictate the amount of money that musicians should be paid to sing. They said that promoters are mere businessmen with little knowledge of what musicians go through to come up
with their music. They later called on events organizers to look for musicians whom they can afford to pay or those who can afford to sing for Peanuts.

They concluded their interview by saying that music should be taught in schools so that people’s talents are nurtured while they are still young so that it becomes so easy for them to sing when they grow up. When asked about their future plans, they said that they intend to make a cultural center in the central region so that it becomes a one-stop- center for tourists.
