Early Life and Family

Yasin Bakaluba was born around 1982 and was raised in the Bukoto-Ntinda area of Kampala. He is the son of Sheikh Muhammad Sekimwanyi, a religious leader and landlord, and Hajat Mariam Nakku.

His parents separated when he was about three years old, and Bakaluba has described his childhood as a difficult period marked by financial hardship.

In his public accounts of his early life, he has recalled walking long distances to school without breakfast and sometimes surviving on leftover sugarcane from delivery trucks in Kalerwe.

The hardships of his childhood would later influence his attitude toward money, education, work and investment.

Education

Bakaluba attended several schools during his childhood, including Bugembe Islamic Institute in Jinja, Bilal Islamic School in Bwaise, Bukoto Muslim Elementary School, Froebel Primary School and Kibuli Secondary School.

His formal education ended at the age of 17 following family circumstances that forced him to leave home.

He subsequently lived with his mother in Kyaliwajjala, where she operated a small shop. He spent approximately three years there looking for opportunities before eventually moving abroad.

Life in the United Kingdom

In 2001, at the age of 19, Bakaluba moved to the United Kingdom after an elder brother helped finance his air ticket.

His first job in Britain was as a parking attendant, but he later moved into the security industry.

He worked as a security guard for approximately 19 years, living a relatively modest lifestyle and prioritising saving over unnecessary spending.

Bakaluba has frequently spoken about deliberately avoiding excessive consumer spending, debt and lifestyle inflation. Instead, he channelled much of his income toward investments in Uganda.

His work as a security guard also gave him an opportunity to observe high-end buildings and property developments in Britain. He has said that exposure influenced his understanding of construction standards, design and finishing.

Hajji Yasin Bakaluba as a Security Guard

Despite spending two decades in Britain, Bakaluba maintained a strong connection to Uganda and continued investing in property back home.

Beginning His Real Estate Journey

Bakaluba began investing in Ugandan real estate while still living and working in the UK.

In 2003, after saving approximately Shs6 million, he purchased his first plot of land, measuring about 50 by 100 feet, in Kulambiro, which at the time was still developing.

He gradually developed the property into six two-room rental units. The project reportedly took about 18 months to complete, with some construction materials sourced from China.

The rental units generated approximately Shs100,000 per month each, providing Bakaluba with an additional source of income.

He subsequently reinvested his earnings and savings into more property.

In 2004, he purchased land in Kisaasi for approximately Shs12 million and developed eight rental units that reportedly generated about Shs800,000 per month.

Rather than seeking rapid returns, Bakaluba adopted a gradual approach, repeatedly reinvesting income into additional land and construction projects.

Building a Property Empire

By the time he permanently returned to Uganda in 2021, Bakaluba had accumulated a significant property portfolio, reportedly including about 35 apartments.

His return marked a new phase in his career as he moved from primarily investing for himself to building a formal real estate business.

He founded Bakaluba Property Services, headquartered in Ntinda, Kampala.

The company provides services including construction management, property development, supervision, land transactions, consultancy and investment support.

A major focus of the business is helping Ugandans living in the diaspora invest in property back home without falling victim to fraud, unreliable agents or poorly managed construction projects.

Bakaluba has emphasised direct supervision of projects, regular communication with clients and providing remote investors with updates on construction progress.

Bakaluba Mall and Other Projects

Among his notable developments is Bakaluba Mall, a commercial shopping centre located around the Mbalwa/Namugongo-Kira area.

The mall has housed a variety of businesses, including retail outlets, a supermarket, pharmacy, salons, mobile money services and food-related businesses.

The development was affected by a fire in November 2025, with reports indicating that the fire started on the upper floor. Initial reports did not indicate any fatalities.

Beyond his own properties, Bakaluba has also overseen construction projects for clients.

Public accounts of his work vary considerably depending on the period and source, but he has been associated with the construction of more than 100 houses and numerous apartments and commercial properties, including projects in areas such as Mukono and Kigo.

He has also continued acquiring and developing his own properties.

Championing Diaspora Investment

One of the central themes of Bakaluba’s business career has been encouraging Ugandans living abroad to invest in property in Uganda.

He has repeatedly warned diaspora investors about the risks of sending money to relatives, agents or contractors without proper supervision.

His company therefore positions itself as a bridge between diaspora investors and Uganda’s property and construction sector.

Through his public appearances and business engagements, Bakaluba encourages investors to conduct proper due diligence, verify land ownership and supervise construction rather than simply relying on verbal agreements.

He has also advocated for reforms to Uganda’s land administration system, including stronger oversight of land transactions, simpler title processes and faster approval of building plans.

Bakaluba has appeared at business and investment events in Uganda and abroad, including engagements involving Ugandan diaspora communities.

He has participated in investment conventions and spoken to Ugandans in countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, South Africa and the Netherlands.

His story has particularly resonated with aspiring entrepreneurs and diaspora Ugandans seeking practical guidance on property investment.

While he is not extensively documented in international reference publications, his career has received attention through Ugandan media, interviews, business events and his own public engagements.

Hajji Yasin Bakaluba’s biography is ultimately a story of hardwork, disciplined saving and long-term investment.
