The Government of Uganda unveiled a US$50 million electricity expansion programme aimed at accelerating power connections across the country, with a special focus on underserved rural communities.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Minerals, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, during the opening of the 4th Power & Electricity Uganda 2026 Exhibition at the UMA Show Grounds in Kampala.

According to Nyamutoro, the initiative falls under the Ministry’s Electricity Scale-Up Project and is designed to connect up to one million Ugandans to the national electricity grid through free one-pole and no-pole connections.
“The Ministry has had the Electricity Scale-Up Project in the pipeline for a long time, and through it, we shall be reaching out to one million Ugandans by providing one-pole and no-pole connections free of charge. It’s our way of extending access to affordable electricity to the population,” Nyamutoro said.
She revealed that the programme has been allocated more than US$50 million in the current financial year and will be implemented in phases.
“This financial year has a budget supported with over US$50 million. It’s going to be implemented in phases, and we shall soon begin enrolling beneficiaries. The project had already started, with some connections completed last year, and it is now continuing in phases,” she explained.
The government expects the initiative to increase electricity access, improve livelihoods, and support socio-economic development by expanding reliable and affordable power to households across Uganda.
