“Hallelujah” is a simple song, and its simplicity is what makes it stand out, and for the first few melismatic syllables, the duo sounds wracked with praise: Their voices slide into an easy, bluesy groove, their vocal cadence syncing up with the afrobeat arpeggio. The howl turns into a sort of sigh. They are both singing about an emotionally uncertain state. And then the drums kick in. Given that “Halleluyah” is not the first thing that most of us are hearing from Kataleya and Kandle, that’s a remarkably self-assured potential hit just like Njagala Money, Nyash, and Do Me among others.
