Ugandan musician Martha Mukisa has spoken out against body-shaming, urging people to embrace their natural bodies instead of allowing social media criticism to dictate how they should look.
Martha acknowledged that social media can be toxic, particularly when it comes to people’s appearance, but said she remains confident and comfortable in her natural body.
“I’ll not do surgery on any part of my body and I’ll remain sexy as I am,” she said, adding that she considers herself a very sexy woman and already has what some women seek through plastic surgery.
The singer questioned why society has seemingly moved away from appreciating Black women and embracing self-love, instead focusing on body-shaming and constantly finding fault with people’s appearances.
“I’m actually not against people who do plastic surgery and make their bodies look better, but I don’t understand the people who always have something negative to say,” Martha said.
She revealed that she has encountered numerous comments about her body online, including a recent remark suggesting that Fresh Diary should make her an ambassador because of her large breasts.
However, Martha said such comments do not bring her down. Instead, she believes they motivate her to keep pushing forward.
“When people see you in a better place, they always think that what weakens them will weaken you too,” she said, noting that what others expect to hurt her instead pushes her towards a better position.
Martha maintained that she is happy and comfortable with her body and has no plans to change herself to satisfy societal expectations.
She encouraged people, particularly women, to embrace themselves and appreciate the bodies they were given rather than allowing social media standards to make them feel inadequate.
“We should begin loving ourselves just the way God created us,” she concluded.
