Police in Iganga District have arrested a 19-year-old private security guard over the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old boda boda rider following an argument outside a supermarket in Nakigo Sub-county.
The suspect, Kirya Edrine Shakul, attached to Centurion Security Company, is accused of shooting Mulwana Nuraini during a confrontation that occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, in Bugabwe Village.
According to Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, preliminary investigations indicate that Mulwana had visited a supermarket where Kirya was on guard duty. The guard reportedly asked him to leave, but the request was ignored, leading to a heated verbal exchange.
Police say the confrontation escalated when Kirya allegedly fired a single shot, striking Mulwana in the lower jaw. The victim died instantly at the scene.
The shooting sparked panic among residents, with news of the incident quickly spreading through local radio stations and WhatsApp groups.
A team of detectives from Iganga Central Police Station visited and documented the scene before transferring the deceased’s body to Iganga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Investigators recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, identified as a Legacy Sports Reno NV 12 CA/MAGNUM (3″) shotgun, along with three live rounds of ammunition. One spent cartridge casing was also recovered from the scene.
Police have since registered a case of murder by shooting and say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
ASP Kasadha urged private security companies to strengthen the training of guards in firearm handling and conflict de-escalation, emphasizing that armed personnel must exercise restraint and only use force within the limits of the law.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
