Ugandan singer Chozen Blood has peeled back the curtain on one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he was battling serious mental health challenges at a time when his hit song “Sharp Shooter” was dominating the Ugandan music scene.
Speaking during an interview on NRG Ignition, the singer recalled how 2021 became an emotionally overwhelming year despite his growing musical success.
While “Sharp Shooter” was enjoying massive popularity and establishing Chozen Blood as one of Uganda’s rising stars, the singer says his personal life was telling a completely different story.
He had lost his mother, welcomed his first child and was simultaneously struggling to secure performance bookings.
The combination of grief, fatherhood and frustration over his stalled career reportedly became too much to carry.
Chozen Blood described the period as frightening, saying the painful realities of adulthood forced him to confront emotions he had previously avoided.
“That kind of drew my mind closer to the reality line and you know whenever reality surfaces, the young version of us is demolishing and that phase is scary.”
During his most difficult moments, Chozen Blood said he was fortunate to have fellow singer Winnie Nwagi by his side.
The singer credited Nwagi for helping him confront what he was experiencing rather than allowing him to remain trapped in denial.
“I’m grateful I had a good friend in the dark corner, Winnie Nwagi.”
According to Chozen Blood, her support helped him gradually move toward accepting the reality of what was happening in his life.
He believes that accepting difficult circumstances is an important step towards recovery because it allows the mind to shift from denial to finding solutions.
“The problem comes in denial, but if you accept that something has happened, the brain gets into solution mode, and that’s what my friend helped me with. She drove me close to acceptance.”
