Fresh controversy has erupted at Mulago National Referral Hospital after police reportedly arrested a doctor accused of wandering near the heavily guarded ward where detained opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye is receiving treatment.
Dr Moses Mukose was arrested on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after visiting the sixth floor of the hospital, where Besigye has been admitted since collapsing during court proceedings last week.
According to his lawyer, Eron Kiiza, Mukose had gone to the sixth floor to check on his father-in-law, who is also receiving treatment on the same floor.
However, security personnel reportedly stopped and detained him, accusing him of “disobeying lawful orders.”
Kiiza said Mukose told him that he had simply finished visiting his father-in-law when security officers approached him.
The lawyer further alleged that security personnel accused the doctor of having been sent by People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) member Ingrid Turinawe to monitor officers deployed around Besigye’s hospital ward.
“I spoke to Dr Mukose this morning. He said he had simply finished checking on his father-in-law, who is a patient on the same floor as Kizza Besigye,” Kiiza said.
Kiiza questioned the restrictions surrounding the ward, suggesting that movement around the floor had become heavily restricted.
Turinawe, a longtime ally of Besigye, dismissed the allegations and questioned why Mukose would be prevented from checking on a patient he knows.
“Dr Mukose is a colleague and a friend to KB. What stops him from checking on a patient he knows?” she asked.
Mukose was subsequently released on police bond on Sunday.
A police bond document reportedly cited the allegation as “wandering about at Level Six VIP Section of Mulago Hospital.”
He was ordered to report back to Mulago Police Station on August 10, 2026.
Turinawe later mocked the development, joking that her alleged “spy” had been released on bond over what she described as “wondering about Level 6.”
