usician and Bad Character Records boss Kalifah AgaNaga has turned up the heat on fast-food giant KFC Uganda, demanding Shs550 million over the alleged unauthorized use of his music in a social media advertisement.
Through his lawyers at Elgon Advocates, Kalifah has served KFC’s Managing Director with a notice of infringement of copyright and neighbouring rights.
The dispute centres on music from the “Nassanga Remix”, which Kalifah alleges was used as background audio in a promotional video published on KFC Uganda’s official TikTok account without his permission.
According to the legal notice, KFC allegedly reproduced and communicated Kalifah’s musical work to the public for commercial purposes without obtaining authorization from the artist or his representatives.
His lawyers argue that the alleged use amounts to infringement of their client’s copyright rights under Uganda’s Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.
They are seeking damages, an account of profits and an injunction over the alleged infringement.
Kalifah’s legal team has demanded the immediate removal and deletion of the disputed video from KFC’s TikTok account and any other official social media platforms where it may have been published.
The lawyers have also instructed the company to immediately cease and desist from any further unauthorized use of Kalifah’s musical catalogue in advertisements and promotional campaigns.
Beyond the removal of the content, Kalifah is demanding Shs500 million in aggravated damages. His lawyers cite alleged unauthorized commercial exploitation of his work, potential loss of licensing revenue and damage to the musician’s brand.
An additional Shs50 million has been demanded to cover legal costs incurred while pursuing the matter, bringing the total claim to Shs550 million.
The legal notice reportedly gives KFC seven days from the date of receipt to comply with the demands.
