Government Reinstates Shs1M Monthly Allowance for Medical Interns – Ssenyonyi

Ssenyonyi revealed that the government has acknowledged the need to facilitate medical interns and has reinstated the Shs1 million monthly allowance

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has shared a positive update regarding the government’s decision to reinstate the monthly facilitation for medical interns.

Ssenyonyi revealed that the government has acknowledged the need to facilitate medical interns and has reinstated the Shs1 million monthly allowance for each intern, which had previously been withheld.

He, however, called for further engagements with the government to consider increasing the allowance beyond Shs1 million, citing the rising cost of living, inflation and changing economic circumstances over the years.

According to Ssenyonyi, while the reinstatement of the allowance is a welcome development, there is still a need to ensure that medical interns receive adequate facilitation to support them as they undertake their training and provide essential services in health facilities.

The development comes shortly after medical interns went on strike to protest the non-payment of their allowances, among other challenges affecting their work.

Ssenyonyi said the reinstatement of the allowance is a positive step, while urging continued dialogue to address the broader concerns affecting medical interns.

Finally, Govt’ has acknowledged that all medical interns require facilitation, and is now going to reinstate the 1m allowance per month to each medical intern.
