Ugandan football has been thrown into shock after SC Villa captain David Owori was left dead following an attack by unknown assailants near his home in Makindye, Kampala.
The 27-year-old football star was rushed to Case Hospital, where he remained admitted in critical condition as the club, fans, and fellow footballers rallied behind him with messages of support and prayers.
SC Villa confirmed the incident on Wednesday, revealing that Owori had suffered serious injuries after being attacked the previous evening.
Initial reports had suggested that the player had been involved in a boda boda accident, but SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye clarified that the footballer was attacked by thugs.
In a statement, the club called upon fans and the football community to stand with Owori during the difficult moment as he receives medical attention.
The attack has sparked concern among football lovers, with many sending messages wishing the skipper a quick recovery.
Owori has been one of the key figures behind SC Villa’s recent resurgence, playing a major role in the club’s historic 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title triumph — their first championship in two decades and a record-extending 17th league title.
Known for his versatility, discipline, and hardworking nature, Owori has been able to play in multiple positions including right-back, central midfield, and attacking roles.
His leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband, making him one of the longest-serving and most influential players in the SC Villa squad.
The defender recently renewed his contract with the club until January 2027 and was preparing to lead the Jogoos in the upcoming FUFA Super 8 competition.
He began his professional career at Vipers SC between 2016 and 2018 before joining SC Villa, later featuring abroad with Spain’s Vélez CF and Sweden’s Utsiktens BK before returning to the Jogoos in 2023.
