Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki has called for the postponement of the planned enthronement of a new king until after the burial of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, as tensions continue over his succession.
The Prime Minister’s appeal follows the announcement by the Babiito Royal Clan of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the successor to King Oyo.
The decision has, however, faced opposition from members of the late king’s family, including his sister Princess Ruth Komuntale, who have questioned the timing of the announcement.
Komuntale and other royal family members have maintained that King Oyo left a will naming his son as heir and have called for the document to be fully reviewed before any succession decision is finalized.
In a statement titled “An Appeal for Peace and Unity in Tooro,” Prime Minister Calvin urged all sides to put succession discussions on hold until after King Oyo has been laid to rest.
He appealed to the different parties involved to avoid confrontation and allow cultural and legal processes to guide the succession process.
The Prime Minister also called for government support in helping calm the situation and prevent the disagreements from escalating.
King Oyo’s body is yet to be laid to rest, with the succession dispute now adding tension to preparations for his final send-off.
