Ugandan songstress Lydia Jazmine has confirmed receiving Shs1.4 million in royalties from the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS), but says the payment has left her questioning whether artists are being fairly rewarded for their work.
The singer revealed that she chose not to publicly announce the payment after receiving it, unlike fellow artists Spice Diana, who openly shared her royalty earnings, and Weasel Manizo, who disclosed receiving about Shs250,000.
Speaking about the payout, Lydia Jazmine expressed disappointment, saying the amount does not match the years she has invested in her music career.
“But that’s small money. You can’t tell me all those years I have worked for Shs1.4m. I saw what others got, but I don’t know what’s wrong,” she said.
Lydia Jazmine’s comments have added to the ongoing conversation among Ugandan musicians over royalty payments and whether artists are receiving fair compensation from their creative works.
Several musicians have previously raised concerns about transparency, distribution, and the value of royalties collected from their songs.
