Winnie Byanyima, wife of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has appealed to the government to consider granting her husband bail so he can access specialised medical treatment outside prison.
Byanyima says Besigye’s health has continued to deteriorate, raising fresh concerns about his ability to walk and speak following his return to Luzira Prison from Mulago National Referral Hospital.
She says the situation requires urgent medical attention and has called on the authorities to allow Besigye to receive the specialised care he needs while his legal case proceeds.
According to Byanyima, her appeal should not be interpreted as a demand for the charges against Besigye to be dropped.
Instead, she wants the government to ensure that his health and wellbeing are protected as he continues to face the legal process.
Besigye’s continued detention and deteriorating health have renewed concerns among his family, supporters and political allies, who have repeatedly called for him to be granted bail on medical and humanitarian grounds.
Byanyima maintains that allowing Besigye to access adequate medical treatment outside prison would not interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings, but would instead ensure that he receives the care necessary for his condition
