At least 14 people have been killed and four others injured following a horrific road crash along the Kampala–Masaka Highway.

The fatal accident occurred at around 11:00pm on Monday in Lwera Swamp near Kamunga Trading Centre, when a Toyota Hiace taxi collided head-on with a Sino truck carrying sand.

Police said all 14 people who lost their lives were travelling in the taxi and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four survivors were injured in the crash. Two were occupants of the taxi, while the other two were travelling in the truck. They were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda, where deadly crashes continue to claim lives almost every day.

According to Uganda Police’s 2025 Annual Crime Report, an average of 15 people died in road crashes every day during the year.

The report recorded 26,044 road crashes in 2025, including 4,602 fatal crashes, 13,563 serious crashes and 7,879 minor crashes.

The Lwera tragedy has once again raised questions about road safety, driver behaviour and the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent avoidable deaths on Uganda’s highways.
