The King’s death was announced on Thursday night, August 27, 2026, by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said the monarch passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m.
In a statement, the Prime Minister described the death as a profound loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda as a whole.
He called on the people of Tooro to remain calm, united and prayerful as the kingdom enters a period of mourning.
The announcement came after hours of uncertainty surrounding the monarch’s health. Earlier on Thursday, Tooro Kingdom had confirmed that King Oyo was in critical condition and appealed to the public to pray for him while warning against spreading unverified information about his health.
Cause of death remains undisclosed
At the time of publication, Tooro Kingdom has not officially stated the illness or medical condition that led to King Oyo’s death.
Reports had indicated that the monarch was receiving medical care in the United States. However, details concerning his treatment and the exact cause of death have not been officially released by the Royal Family or the Kingdom.

A King who ascended the throne as a child
King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, to the late Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
He became Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father. At just three years old, he became one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs. (Monitor
Because of his young age, the young monarch was initially guided by regents before eventually taking on greater responsibilities in the administration of the kingdom as he grew older.

The death of King Oyo has also raised questions about the future of the Tooro monarchy.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki has assured the people of Tooro that the institution of the monarchy will continue.
He revealed that the late King left behind a Prince who is expected to become heir to the Tooro throne. However, the identity of the Prince will be formally announced at an appropriate time in accordance with the traditions and customs of the kingdom.
The Prime Minister said further information concerning funeral and mourning arrangements would be communicated by the Kingdom.
A remarkable royal journey comes to an end
King Oyo’s life was closely connected to the modern history of Tooro Kingdom. He inherited the throne while still a toddler and grew into one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.
His death at 34 brings to an end a reign that lasted almost three decades and leaves the people of Tooro facing the loss of a monarch whose entire life was intertwined with the kingdom he represented.
As preparations for the official mourning and burial arrangements begin, attention will now turn to the Royal Family, the Kingdom’s cultural institutions and the process through which the next chapter of the Tooro monarchy will be announced.
