The race for Uganda’s presidency in 2031 may already be taking shape after Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Executive Secretary Daudi Kabanda claimed that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba will contest for the country’s highest office.
According to Kabanda, Muhoozi personally instructed him to communicate his plans to the public.
“General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has told me to inform you that he will run for President 2031–2036,” Kabanda said.
Kabanda further claimed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sanctioned his son’s presidential ambitions and would support his campaign.
According to the PLU official, Museveni would even serve as the chief campaigner for Muhoozi should he contest for the presidency in 2031.
The claims suggest that there would be no political conflict between Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions and the leadership of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Kabanda’s remarks come days after Muhoozi himself publicly indicated that he intends to seek what he described as “the highest office in the land” in 2031.
The latest declaration has once again pushed the question of Uganda’s political succession into the national spotlight, five years before the next scheduled presidential election.
Muhoozi, who is President Museveni’s son and chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, has become an increasingly influential figure in Uganda’s political landscape.
He previously withdrew from the 2026 presidential race and backed his father, President Museveni, during his successful bid for another term.
Whether President Museveni himself will seek another term in 2031 remains unclear.
Government and ruling party officials have previously maintained that decisions regarding Museveni’s future political plans would be made by the President and the NRM when the appropriate time comes.
For now, Kabanda’s remarks have added fresh momentum to discussions about Uganda’s future leadership—and whether 2031 could finally mark the beginning of a major political transition.
