Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has given State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere 72 hours to apologise to him or face a threat to lose her ministerial position and his opposition in the Masaka parliamentary race.
Speaking on September 20, 2026, Muhoozi claimed that residents of Masaka supported him and President Yoweri Museveni but not Nameere.
“The people of Masaka support me, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and President Museveni. Not Nameere. Never. If she doubts it, I will go there and campaign for my preferred candidate,” he said.
Muhoozi did not disclose the candidate he would support, but his remarks have raised questions about Nameere’s political future in Masaka City, where her election victory remains contested.
On Sunday morning, he issued a fresh ultimatum, saying Nameere had “exactly 72 hours to apologise to me” and warning that he would remove her from her ministerial position if she failed to do so.
The latest threat follows an earlier statement on September 16, when Muhoozi gave the minister seven days to apologise, warning that “nothing will save her” if she refused.
The dispute reportedly began after a short video circulated appearing to show Nameere warning Muhoozi against fighting National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators. A longer version of the recording, however, showed that she was addressing Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Secretary General Daudi Kabanda rather than Muhoozi.
Kabanda has also questioned Nameere’s election victory and called for a by-election in Masaka City.
Nameere defeated National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Rose Nalubowa following a controversial recount. The Electoral Commission had initially declared Nalubowa the winner of the January 2026 election.
Nameere challenged the result and obtained a court-ordered recount. Masaka Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe later overturned Nalubowa’s victory and declared Nameere the Masaka City Woman MP-elect.
Nalubowa subsequently challenged the decision in the High Court. Her lawyers argued that the magistrate lacked the authority to reverse the Electoral Commission’s declaration and award the seat to Nameere.
