Big Talent Entertainment boss and singer Eddy Kenzo has opened up about his rise to prominence in Uganda’s music industry, revealing how his growing success eventually sparked conflicts with fellow artistes who initially did not take him seriously.
Looking back to around 2010, Kenzo says that was the period when things started getting heated as other musicians began realizing that he was no longer the “joker” they had initially perceived him to be.
“Around 2010, that’s where the conflicts started because that’s when they started to recognize me as a threat, but back then, they took me as a joker,” Kenzo said.
The singer explained that during his early years in the industry, he was extremely prolific and could compose several songs in a single day.
“Then, they used to make a mistake, but at that time I used to compose five songs a day. When you look at ‘Yanimba’, ‘Nategedde Onimba’, ‘So Lonely,’ ‘Sole Na Ngatto,’ ‘Zigido,’ all those songs I composed them at the same time. I was very creative during those days. I remember in just a period of three years, I had about 200 songs. All the time I used to be in studio,” he recalled.
Kenzo, who has since established himself as one of Uganda’s most recognizable music stars, also reflected on the difficult journey he endured before finally getting his breakthrough.
“I had suffered a lot and that’s when I had seen that God had opened my doors to shine. I had a burning zeal and I got the breakthrough.”
He also revealed how he deliberately found his way into Bobi Wine’s Firebase Crew after hearing that the then-established star had been impressed by his musical abilities.
According to Kenzo, a friend broke the news to him while they were at Waller Pub in Kabusu, telling him that Bobi Wine had taken interest in his music.
Rather than wait for a personal invitation from Bobi Wine, Kenzo says he immediately made his way to Firebase.
“In fact, when I went to Firebase Crew, I took myself there. I remember we were at Waller Pub in Kabusu and a friend of mine whispered to me how Bobi Wine had loved my music abilities. I didn’t wait for Bobi Wine to tell it to me personally. The next day, I headed straight to Firebase and started camping there. But whenever he would pass in one corridor, I took the other.”
Kenzo says he spent nearly a month at Firebase without Bobi Wine even knowing who he was.
His big moment came after a song he had recorded with Mikie Wine was played on Dembe FM and caught Bobi Wine’s attention.
“I spent like a month at Firebase without him knowing me. When he listened to our song with Mikie Wine on Dembe FM, he asked if it was Mikie singing and asked whom he sang with. Then they told him it was me.”
Kenzo also explained how the collaboration with Mikie Wine came about, revealing that he initially wanted to work with Phantom Lovinz before Mikie eventually became part of the project.
“At first, I wanted to sing with Phantom Lovinz on a different project, then Mikie Wine popped up in the equation and I requested him to bring Producer Paddy Man and Tony Houls on the beats and production, and the rest was history. Everything was mastered at Dream Studio and magic happened.”
Kenzo’s revelations offer a glimpse into the early hustle that eventually transformed him from an underestimated young artiste into one of Uganda’s biggest musical names.
