The appointment, announced on Monday, also elevates Brig Gen Nyakikuru to the acting rank of Major General, with both the promotion and appointment taking effect immediately.
He succeeds Maj Gen David Mugisha, who has been serving as Commander of the SFC and is expected to depart in the coming months to attend the National Defence College (NDC) course abroad.
According to the UPDF, Maj Gen Mugisha will undertake the strategic security studies programme after completing what the army described as a remarkable tenure leading the Special Forces Command.
“The UPDF appreciates Major General David Mugisha for his outstanding service as Commander SFC and wishes him every success in his strategic security studies,” said Col Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA).
The army also congratulated Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru on his appointment and wished him success as he assumes leadership of the Special Forces Command.
The Special Forces Command is tasked with carrying out specialised operations, including safeguarding strategic national interests and protecting key national installations.
The changes come as the UPDF continues implementing its programme of rotating senior officers through command positions and professional development courses as part of institutional career advancement.
