Singer Geosteady Blackman has seemingly drawn a red line around Lugogo Cricket Oval, openly admitting that the massive concert venue scares him and declaring that he has no plans of ever staging a show there.
Lugogo Cricket Oval has long been regarded as one of Uganda’s biggest concert venues and, for years, has been used as a measuring stick for an artist’s pulling power.
For musicians who manage to fill the expansive venue with thousands of revelers, the achievement is often seen as a major statement of their status in the industry. But for Geosteady, Lugogo is a different story.
During a recent interview, the celebrated singer made it clear that he has never dreamed of holding a concert at the venue and has no intention of putting himself through what he described as the frightening prospect of a low turnout.
According to Geosteady, he has watched several artists struggle to attract sizeable crowds at Lugogo, something that has left him unwilling to take the gamble.
“I cannot handle this venue. As a person, I have my own principles in me and, truthfully, I’m scared of Lugogo. For one to do something, they must have dreamed about it or wished for it, but I have never thought about that. It has never come to my mind. I do not have it and I will never do it.”
Geosteady, who has carved out a niche with his emotional love ballads, further explained that his music is better suited to intimate indoor settings than massive outdoor venues.
The singer believes his sound connects better with a controlled and close-knit audience, making a huge open-air venue like Lugogo Cricket Oval less ideal for his style of performance.
While Lugogo remains the ultimate dream for many Ugandan musicians seeking to prove their heavyweight status, Geosteady appears content to chart his own path—choosing intimacy over the pressure of filling one of the country’s biggest concert grounds.
