Hoima City Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Asinansi Nyakato Kamanda, has appealed to private school owners to exercise patience and compassion towards students struggling with outstanding school fees, particularly as they prepare to sit their final national examinations.
Nyakato urged school administrators not to prevent learners from sitting their examinations simply because their parents or guardians have not cleared the full school fees balance.
She also called on the Ministry of Education and Sports to urgently intervene and ensure that schools comply with directives allowing students to sit their final national examinations despite outstanding fees.
“I call upon the Ministry of Education to come out quickly and issue a statement, and also go on the ground to check out the schools that have defied its directive on students sitting for the final national exams,” Nyakato said.
The legislator further appealed to schools to consider withholding students’ results until outstanding balances are cleared rather than denying them the opportunity to sit the examinations.
“I also urge and plead to schools that if a student has been with you from the lower classes, why would you make it difficult for them to sit for exams because of a school fees balance?” she asked.
Nyakato argued that denying a student the chance to sit their final examinations over unpaid fees could have long-term consequences on their education and future.
“Let them do the exams and withhold the results, and pay after or at a later date. If you don’t do it that way, that means you are killing and sitting on that child’s future,” she said.
She also urged head teachers and school administrators to demonstrate understanding and act as parents to learners during the examination period.
“We plead to head teachers to act as parents as well at this turn of the year,” Nyakato added.
