Kyambogo University has come under scrutiny after a certificate mix-up left some graduates with academic qualifications for programmes they say they never studied.
The matter was raised before Parliament’s Committee on Education, where lawmakers heard that students who had enrolled for a Diploma in Physical Education and Sports were instead awarded certificates indicating that they had completed Sports Management.
The revelation sparked concern among legislators, who questioned how such a significant error could occur at one of Uganda’s major public universities.
Lawmakers also raised concerns about the potential consequences for the affected graduates, particularly when presenting their academic documents to employers or pursuing further studies.
Appearing before the committee, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Justus Kwetegyeka acknowledged the error and assured MPs that the institution had already started working to correct it.
He explained that the university was following its established academic procedures to ensure that all affected graduates receive certificates accurately reflecting the programmes they actually studied.
The committee is expected to continue monitoring the matter as Kyambogo works to rectify the certificates and address concerns surrounding its academic administration.
For the affected graduates, the focus now remains on getting the correct qualifications reflected on their certificates without further delays.
