The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged members of the public to embrace collective responsibility and actively participate in community development projects instead of always waiting for wealthy individuals to come to their rescue.
Mayiga made the remarks while rallying the public to support a fundraising drive for Masaka Diocese, which is seeking to raise Shs1.5 billion to establish an empowerment centre.
According to the Buganda premier, communities can achieve much more when everyone contributes towards projects instead of leaving the burden to a few people perceived to be rich.

“If we come together and drop the tendency of expecting what we refer to as the ‘rich’ to come to our rescue, the ‘rich’ cannot carry out every project by themselves. But if all of us come together, I think it becomes a lot easier.”
Mayiga revealed that he has adopted the same principle within his own family, where members are expected to contribute whenever there is a project or programme requiring support.
“In my family, I totally banished the issue of waiting for someone considered ‘rich’. If there is a programme, everybody must contribute. When a project is carried out by the community, it belongs to the community and everybody gets to be happy.”
He encouraged the public to abandon the mindset that community projects should be funded exclusively by wealthy individuals, emphasizing that collective contribution can make even major projects achievable.
Church projects should not be left to the “rich,” says Katikkiro @cpmayiga, urging the public to collectively support them as Masaka Diocese seeks Shs 1.5 billion for an empowerment centre.#NTVNews https://t.co/t6g2VYi3ua pic.twitter.com/PN9sXii7Vm
