Nation Media Group Uganda resumes operations

Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has announced that it will fully resume operations, exactly one month after its television, radio, print, and digital platforms were forced off air following a military operation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the media house confirmed that its services will return progressively, bringing an end to weeks of disruption that began on June 28, when security personnel raided its facilities in Kampala.

NMG PLC Chairman Joe Muganda said the company is ready to resume its core mission of providing credible and balanced journalism across all its platforms.

“As we return to serving you, our focus remains the delivery of trusted and balanced journalism across all our platforms,” Muganda said.

He also expressed gratitude to readers, viewers, listeners, advertisers, and business partners for their patience, loyalty, and continued confidence in the company’s brands throughout the shutdown.

The announcement follows high-level engagements involving President Yoweri Museveni, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Tanzanian businessman Rostam Azizi, whose investment firm, Taifa Limited, earlier this year acquired a controlling 54.08 percent stake in Nation Media Group, East Africa’s largest media company.

NMG’s operations were suspended in the early hours of June 28 after security personnel raided the Daily Monitor headquarters in Namuwongo and the Kampala Serena International Conference Centre, home to the broadcast studios of NTV Uganda and Spark TV.

The operation reportedly caused a power outage that took NTV Uganda and Spark TV off air at around 5:00 a.m. It also disrupted the publication of the Daily Monitor newspaper and affected the operations of KFM 93.3, Dembe FM 90.4, and the group’s digital platforms.

At the time, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba stated that the shutdown had been carried out on the orders of President Museveni, alleging that the media house had engaged in a sustained campaign to undermine the government while promoting opposition and foreign interests.

With operations now set to resume, the development marks a significant moment for Uganda’s media industry as one of the country’s largest independent media organizations returns to serving audiences across its various platforms.
