Police have confirmed the arrest of a female suspect in connection with the murder of veteran Afrigo Band singer Moses Matovu, as investigations into the shocking killing intensify.
The development was confirmed by ASP Rachael Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, who said the suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting detectives with the investigation.
According to Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu was murdered early Thursday morning in Market Zone B, Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala District.
“We’ve started the investigations into the murder of veteran and legendary singer Moses Matovu. The preliminary investigations reveal that he was murdered early this morning in the areas of Market Zone B, Kibuli, Makindye, Kampala District. One female suspect has been apprehended, who is believed to have been with him, to aid us with the probe,” Kawala said.
Police say the arrested woman has provided information that could help investigators identify and apprehend another suspect believed to have been involved in the killing.
The male suspect, however, remains at large, with police saying efforts are underway to track him down.
“She has told us the exact person who was involved in the murder of Moses Matovu, and we’re doing everything possible to arrest the individual who is still at large. Investigations reveal they’ve been friends, and our task force is on the ground collecting evidence to help us trace and get information about the murder,” Kawala added.
Kawala further revealed that Matovu was reportedly with the arrested woman around the time he was attacked.
Police have also established that the man being sought is believed to work for a private security company, although Kawala said more details would be provided once he is arrested.
“By the time of his attack, it is reported that Matovu was with the arrested woman. What we have so far got is that the suspect works with a private security company. When we arrest him, we shall give a detailed update about him.”
The incident is reported to have occurred at around 5:00am, sending shockwaves through Uganda’s entertainment industry and leaving fans mourning the loss of one of the country’s most celebrated veteran musicians.
Police say their task force remains on the ground collecting evidence and following leads as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death and apprehend all those responsible.
